Weeds can be an absolute pain to handle and get rid of, they are often very stubborn and have the potential to grow back extremely quickly. Weeds can be harmful to your garden for many reasons. But the main one that concerns most gardeners is the fact it takes away vital nutrients and sunlight from other plants. For example, weeds growing in a carrot patch and use up nutrients in the soil and sunlight that the carrots could otherwise have used.

A little known solution to the problem of weeds is the flame gun. Its a alternative to the harsh weed killers that are full of harmful chemicals. Not only is it better for the soil, it also means less of a risk to your children and pets who may play in your garden.

How the flame gun works

The flame gun kills weeds using a 2000 Fahrenheit controlled flame. When directed at the base of weeds it stops sap rising, so the top growth dries out in a day or two. A second use of the flame gun consumes dried up weeds and weed seeds leaving a potash rich residue.

You can run the flame gun on clean paraffin which you can pick up at your local DIY store or gas station.

Top tips

• Don't use on a galvanised rabbit fence as you will loose the protective coatings.
• The flame gun is best used during the summer months when everything is dry and warm, as the weeds will burn better.
